Final Day at Jr Pan Pacs
Photo credit: Nancy Brothers (Click image to enlarge) more photos on our facebook page.
The last day of Junior Pan Pac Championships was the most successful for the Canadian Team yet.
We had lots of great swims from the morning and some real medal contenders going into finals. Stefanie swam to a personal best in the 1500 and Peter in the 800.
Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson started off the finals with GOLD in the 200 IM, Kierra Smith and Mariya Chekanovych repeated their results from the 100 breast in the 200 Breast, winning GOLD and SILVER and Kierra set a new meet record. Then Will Brothers finished the 800 free with a SILVER medal and personal best time. The last medal of the evening was a very exciting race with the girls 4x100 medley relay in which Canada finished with a BRONZE.
Canada won a total of 11 medals at this meet with many fourth place finishes which was great to see.
All in all it was a fantastic meet with great swimming, hope you enjoyed the photos,
Nancy

Canada is golden on Day 2 of Jr. Pan Pacs
Photo credit: Nancy Brothers (click photo to enlarge)
Aloha from Oahu on day two of the junior pan pac Championships. The Canadian Team did well again today, prelims saw best times from most of the swimmers and we had many in medal contention going into the finals. Peter, Taylor and Stefanie swam the 100 free and Will swam the 400 IM this morning. Will made the A final in the 400 IM with a best time.
At finals, I was feeling the pain for the booth officials as we had major timing board electronic issues and out came the stop watches!
Finals were very successful for the Canadian squad as Canada's Kierra Smith and Mariya Chkanovych won GOLD and SILVER respectively in the girls 100 breast and the Boys Relay team won BRONZE in the boys 4x200 free relay.
Will finished 5th in the 400 IM with another best time. Its great to see the team spirit at these meets, all the teammates cheer every swimmer on which makes it really exciting.
Day three update tomorrow, Nancy

Jr. Pan Pacs Day 1
Aloha from Oahu! We are here in beautiful Oahu at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Centre.
Prelims went well with mostly best times from all the swimmers. It was a gorgeous sunny day and I had to laugh at the fact we were at a championship meet and they were looking for timers to start the prelims! I guess it is universal.
The meet is set up with A and B finals and the rules of the meet state that there can be no more than three swimmers in total for the A and B finals and no more than two per one final so Canada was able to have most A finals with two swimmers which was great.
Unfortunately for the finals it poured rain the whole evening but didn't dampen the spirit of the ever cheering Canadian squad.
We had some close fourth and fifth place finishes and best times overall which was excellent. Will was able to swim to a Bronze medal finish in the 1500 free which was a great finish to day one.
More updates coming,
Nancy

London August 1st
Great day for Canadian swimming with Brent Hayden getting Canada's first swimming medal, a bronze in the 100m freestyle. Martha McCabe is in finals tonight for 200m breast stroke, go Martha! Canada's women's 4x200m freestyle relay had a great swim to fourth place.
We walked to Buckingham Palace to see the queen, but I think she was napping at the time. Pretty gutsy to jump from a chopper with 007 and make a good landing to enter for the Olympics. The guards actually get to move every once in a while.
We met up with Alec and took him to Canada House off of Trafalgar Square.

2012 HTO Thetis Lake Open Water Swim
Congratulations to everyone from Island Swimming who made it out to the 2012 HTO Thetis Lake Open Water Swim this past weekend, in support of MS. This is a great event that Island Swimming likes to support each year.
The event offers 4 different race distances to choose from; 800m, 1500m, 3k and 5k. In the 800m event, Alexa Bryant of Island Swimming was first overall and Caileigh Hunt-St.Louis was third. Hamish Babin finished third overall in the 1500m distance and Coach Avila Rhodes finished third in the women's 5k race. Island Swimming also had 3 para swimmers take part this year which is very impressive! Ann Marie Gatland placed 10th in the 800m, Peter Havers swam the 1500m and placed 25th and Drew Sabourin finished third in the men's 5k event.
Congratulations everyone!

London, July 29th
Riding the rail system here is fairly easy, we have our route figured out to the Olympic park and to Trafalgar Square where Canada House is. We were there last night watching finals. Brittany MacLean had an awesome swim in prelims, new Canadian record, she was up against the veterans and swam her heart out in the finals.
Can you believe a swim-off in the Olympics! Well, Tera Van Beilen swam well against the Jamaican in the 100m breast swim-off, but was edged out to 9th spot, also Julia Wilkinson came 9th in her 100 back. Good job as well to Blake Worsley, Sinead Russel, Charles Francis, Jillian Tyler, Brent Hayden, Collin Russell, Richard Hortness and Thomas Gossland.
We have been out and about to see a few sights here.If you are wondering what that shape is in one of the pictures we posted, it is called the Orbit. It is a sculpture in Olympic Park, you can walk up the stairs for a view, we will try that when we get back into the park to see prelims tomorrow. Finn and I went onto the London Eye on Friday, great view from up there, no line ups either.

July 28th, London 2012 prelims
The first day of swimming races, and I must say the atmosphere was incredible. Everyone cheering for everyone, no matter if you were from Great Britain or Tonga, we would cheer. There were some huge upsets and amazing happenings in the prelims. Park Tae Hwan got disqualified in the 400 free, he has appealed but at this point I don't know if he won it or not. But on better note for our Canadian athletes, right now in finals we have Ryan in the 400 free, Scott Dickens in the 100 breast semi final and now it seems that Katerine Savard is in the 100 fly semi final. Stephanie Horner, Victoria Poon, Julia Wilkinson, Samantha Cheverton, Heather Maclean and Alec Page all did well in their races too. There were amazing accomplishments from the all the athletes. There was a Olympic Record set this morning from Dana Vollmer from the USA with a time of 56.25 in the 100 fly. We scored some tickets for tonight's finals should be good.
